How to look like you're working: Odd Hours Edition
I'm in awe of the people who are disciplined to wake up at 5 AM every day, eat breakfast, go to the gym, and get to work on time. You are a superhero to me! I would much rather hit the snooze alarm, enjoy my beauty rest, and wake up in a panic at the last minute because I don't want to give up the covers.
I'm not a morning person, but I do get some of my best, most focused work done in the afternoons and evenings.
Here's my tips for looking like I have my shit together at standard business hours, and making my life easier for other people:
I use boomerang like it's my job. Boomerang is a gmail add-in that allows me to work late into the night (typically my best working times), but send emails as though I'm on a normal schedule. Say whaaat! Seriously, I do my work at night and schedule my email to go out at a time and date I designate. It's a win for me because it's done, and it's a win for my client because they see it shortly after their workday starts (no late night email notifications)!
I use asana to get out of my emails. I'm a serious email archiver, and I don't want to spend all day answering emails. In order to shut down gmail for awhile, and keep a clean inbox, I create specific, manageable tasks in asana for each client project based an email communication back and forth. It keeps me on track with upcoming deadlines, and helps me focus on my "big three" tasks for the day.
I have a routine. I'm no early bird, but I still get up, and drink some water and make my coffee each morning. I prefer to start my workday from home around 9 AM, but I want to do that in my jammies from my couch or bed. My version of work is freedom to choose where to sit, and what I get to see outside some days. I'll often split up my workday to meet my husband or a friend for lunch if I don't have meetings, and enjoy an afternoon gym class.
